The leader of the political opposition, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, said Thursday that the official voter lists for parliamentary elections next month included the names of dead people and raised questions about the potential for election fraud.
Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, who is running for a seat in Parliament, called on other nations to closely monitor the elections and to take into account how the country’s election commission deals with complaints of electoral irregularities before determining their diplomatic policies toward Myanmar.
The United States and other Western nations applied economic and political sanctions against Myanmar because its former military government was autocratic and had a poor human rights record. But they have started to consider easing the sanctions since an elected, though military-backed, government took power last year and began instituting reforms. Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi’s political party, the National League for Democracy, is fielding candidates for all 48 seats at stake in the elections on April 1.
