JAKARTA, March 30 (Xinhua) - The United States on Friday stressed here the importance of successful by-election in Myanmar scheduled on April 1.
Nirav Patel, the U.S. Deputy Assistant of State for Strategy and Multilateral Affairs, told reports after a public lecture in the ASEAN Secretariat that his country and Myanmar has been increasing diplomacy since the last year."An important aspect helped our diplomacy and Myanmar over the past year has been the ability for us to have more focus and dialog in ASEAN," said Patel.
He said that his country always notes on the key question on how to perform on its broader commitment to "general action for action".
Meanwhile, the ASEAN Secretariat received an invitation to observe the Myanmar by-election to take place on April 1.
ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan said that his organization was pleased to lend its support to the political process.
"This is a significant political process which we hope to contribute further to national reconciliation," said Pitsuwan.
