YANGON--Japan, seeking to gain an early foothold into the promising Myanmar (Burma) market, kicked off "Japan Festival 2012" here on March 9 to promote Japanese products.

Given growing speculation that Western nations may soon lift economic sanctions against Myanmar, the festival was conceived as a move to capture interest among the 60 million population.

It is the first large-scale fair of its kind to be held by Japan in the Southeast Asian nation.
Hitachi Ltd. and Kao Corp. are among 45 companies taking part. The event was organized by the Japan External Trade Organization.

Pink-colored booths, meant to evoke imagery of cherry blossoms, were set up in a hotel hall.
Visitors have an opportunity to view home electric appliances, cosmetic goods and food products.

There are also demonstrations on sushi roll making and a cosplay show, where people dress up as Japanese anime characters.

Japan Festival 2012 runs through March 11.
