MADE ISLAND, Myanmar, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Vice President U Tin Aung Myint Oo on Monday spoke highly of a Sino- Myanmar oil and natural gas pipelines project on Made Island, Rakhine state's Kyaukphyu.
The project is being implemented by the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and related companies. The Myanmar vice president also said that he appreciated the Chinese company's support for Myanmar's charity undertakings.
Made Island, situated in western Myanmar's Rakhine state, is a starting point of the crude oil pipeline, while the starting point of the natural gas pipeline lies in Ramree Island off the west shore of Myanmar on the west coast.
The oil and natural gas pipelines run parallel through Myanmar' s Rakhine state, Magway and Mandalay regions and Shan state and enter into China at Ruili, Yunnan Province.
The crude oil pipeline extends onshore to 771 kilometers, while the natural gas pipeline stretches to 793 kilometers onshore within Myanmar's territory.
While inspecting the project site, U Tin Aung Myint Oo said the oil and gas pipelines run through many areas where poor and ethnic minorities reside. He thanked the Chinese companies for donating cash and kind to the areas for its health and education causes.
He stressed continued support for the socio-economic development of the areas lying along the project, as well as close cooperation with local residents, enabling them to benefit from the project practically.
He also noted that the Sino-Myanmar oil and natural gas pipelines construction is underway smoothly, hoping that the major project could be completed as scheduled and play an efficient role.
Zhang Jialin, president of the South-East Asia Crude Oil Pipeline (SEAOP), briefed U Tin Aung Myint Oo on the progress of the Sino-Myanmar oil and natural gas pipelines project and the CNPC's charity undertakings in the project-covered areas.
He said in 2011, the CNPC, SEAOP and SEAGP donated a total of 4. 07 million U.S. dollars for building 45 schools, 24 hospitals and clinics, bringing 19,486 students to schools or improving the teaching environment, improving healthcare environment to 800,000 people, solving the drinking water issue of 2,490 people by digging tube wells and caring for 100 children.
Zhang also said that in March 2011, with the consent of the shareholders of the joint venture of the CNPC, it would spend 1 million USD annually to launch charity undertakings in Myanmar to benefit the local people inhabiting along the project areas.
He added that the CNPC and related companies will consider providing support for the Rakhine state's electric power network to meet local power shortage.
U Tin Aung Myint Oo, accompanied by Chinese Ambassador Li Junhua and CNPC Vice President Yi Baocai, was welcomed by Made Island project manager Chang Huanlai and site workers.
