Myanmar gov't-KIO talks to continue for 2nd day in Kachin state capital

MYITGYINA, Myanmar, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Talks between the Myanmar government and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) are due to continue for the second day in the capital of the northernmost Kachin state later on Wednesday.
U Aung Min, Vice Chairman of the Central Peace Making Work Committee of the government, said he believed that "agreements would be reached to be able to ensure a lasting peace by effectively utilizing the already achieved outcome from Tuesday's talks."

He also pledged to continue to work for bringing equal rights to ethnic minorities and for their self-administration by holding political dialogue.

Tuesday's talks called for reduction of tension between the two sides and their discussions covered opening of monitoring offices in the conflict areas, matters on armed forces, opening of liaison offices, ceasefire, formation of a monitoring group, resettlement of internally displaced persons in Kachin state, rehabilitation, education and healthcare services.

It was the first time that the government-KIO peace talks was held domestically, with the government side led by U Aung Min, who is also Minister at the President's Office, and the KIO side by U Swan Luk Gam.

The three-day talks, attended by Kachin state parliament representatives, was observed by eight other ethnic armed groups, Chinese Embassy Counselor Lu Zhi and Spokesman Gao Mingbo as well as special envoy of the UN Secretary-General Vijay Nambiar.
