So what do you need to know about the South Asian country?
It has stunning scenery
Myanmar’s troubled past has meant its environment and scenery often go unsung. But as with many countries in that part of the world, Myanmar’s natural beauty is nothing short of breathtaking.
With mountains intertwined with luscious green plains and stunning coastlines, Myanmar’s landscapes are picture perfect.
It has a rich history
The military rule that halted Myanmar’s economic and social development for most of the 20th century will always be a blotch on its history.
But the country has a rich heritage stretching back hundreds of years, with centuries-old Pagan and Buddhist temples still standing to this day.
It has a diverse culture
Myanmar is bordered by a number of countries – India, Bangladesh, Thailand, China and Laos – and has been influenced by all of them.
Indian influences feature most prominently, with many buildings and temples bearing a resemblance to those found in northern India. Theravada Buddhism is the largest single religion, but Christianity, Islam and Hinduism are all practised in the region.
