YANGON, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar government last
weekend established a separate national reform leading committee, led by
President U Thein Sein, to direct efforts on reform program for the
remaining 30 months of the present five-year term of office.
U Thein Sein's government took office on March 30, 2011 after a general election in November 2010 and the term of office is to last for five years.
Addressing his cabinet, U Thein Sein urged all-out efforts to bring about tangible results in the remaining 30 months of its reign.
Recalling the first 30 months of its five-year term, U Thein Sein's government claimed to have laid down the foundation for remarkable democratic transitions to create a new democracy and have created better political environment in the country, improved international relations and continued dialogue for national reconciliation.
The government made a host of changes and relaxed laws, rules and regulations in economic and social reforms and started to integrate into the global market.
The president also claimed that his government initiated four reforms, namely political reform, economic and social reform, administration mechanism reform and private sector reform as a strategic scheme in the transition.
For the second 30 months, the government stressed the need to give higher priority to the basic needs of the people and ensure the socio-economic profits reach them through people-centered development approach.
The government called for drafting and implementing the Integrated Action Plan for the remaining 30 months so as to cover fundamental needs of the people and avoid overlaps of tasks between different ministries and region or state governments.
To ensure tangible results in reform, he urged the government as well as the private sector, which accounts for 90 percent of the entire economy, to perform well.
To ensure good governance and a clean government, the president admitted that he had to make some changes to some senior posts in the government recently including ministers, deputy ministers and directors-general.
In the second 30 months, the president stressed giving high priorities to fulfilling the basic and socio-economic needs of the people, citing areas like electricity supply, adequate drinking and irrigation water, small and medium enterprises and industrial development to create more job opportunities.
U Thein Sein called for the formation of delivery units or task forces and working groups to implement the policies on the ground through cooperation and coordination to bring positive results to the people.
In the national economic development drive, he stressed to take more measures to assure regional security, peace and stability and the rule of law.
